Termite Species Found in Florida

There are three common species of termites in Florida that wreak havoc on commercial and residential structures. These termite species are: Subterranean termites, Formosan termites and Drywood termites. All these common species are equally destructive and have many similarities.

Subterranean Termites

Subterranean termites are just as their name suggests, termites that live in the soil. This is more than likely the way they gained access into your home or business. As they travel through the soil, they invite themselves in where the soil and structure meet. Even as they traverse your building, they will pack soil in the galleries they have made in the wood as they need the moisture. A major sign of subterranean termites are mud tubes.

Formosan Termites

Formosan termites are social insects with three distinct castes. They are a species belonging to subterranean termites. The soldiers or protectors keep the colony safe from enemies and predators, the king and queen continually reproduce, the swarmers or alates being future reproducers of other colonies, and the workers which keep the colony operating smoothly. They do this by ensuring the king, queen and soldiers are well fed, as well as take care of the younglings. Workers also do the constructing of new tunnels or galleries and make any needed repairs. They are responsible for collecting food as well. The soldiers are very aggressive and are the first to emerge to protect the workers and colony if a predator makes itself known or a tunnel collapses.

Drywood Termites

Drywood termites are attracted to dry wood and will feast upon it as well as some other cellulose materials. Like Subterranean and Formosan termites, they are divided in three castes. Drywood termites want little to do with moisture environments unlike the subterranean termites. Drywood termites are very common in Florida and cause substantial damage.

Termite Inspections & Control

Though all termites are active year round, the most activity noticed is in the spring as that is when the swarmers expand out to form new colonies. They are the only termites with wings, but once they have committed to a new home, their wings will be shed.
